The US has generally been perceived to be trailing the world in terms of mobile penetration in general, in particular mobile marketing duu to senstivity in prices of additional services & the fact that data is quite expensive in comparison to voice! This however seems to be evolving & let's face it... with the ability for the American public to access their social network platforms via mobile... I think this gives them a pretty damn good excuse to try it out! Consumption in Asia, in particular China is far greater though with over 380 million mobile users & the launch of 3G last year... Many markets in Asia are indeed using the mobile for mass media usage so once again... Too early you say? Some people probably said that about YouTube or MySpace!!!! Obviously I am one sided as Isobar did indeed play a big role in this... But let's face it... Most things you see online are coming to mobile & while us 'oldies' might not think it too useful.. the target group I feel thinks otherwise!

It's less the mobile aspect and more the brand trying to create and own a socila network. I just don't thiink people (you might know them as consumers) will buy it...

I agree to an extent with you. No commercialised brand can own this space that is for sure... Every social network online that becomes commercialised by affiliate marketers & advertisers get's trashed by it's followers and they move elsewhere. For a brand to take the lead in this though, I think that is daring and impressive which is exactly what they are trying to achieve! The level of followers... well, let's watch this space and see what happens! I can say though, that the mobile space is gonig to evolve beyond what we can perhaps even imagine!
