In the first of Advertising 2.0's regular Friday polls, today's pressing question is "What do you think of the new Brand Republic website?"

Great to see Haymarket moving forward and embracing online, despite the glitches... few of your magazines really get it and poor old Gordon McMillan has long been your Cinderella in the scullery while the Campaign team go to the ball in the form of skiing trips to BBH's Verbier chalet - tho hey there's no such thing as a free lunch and it's been a pleasure reading the ensuing BBH advertorials that clearly demonstrate how BBH are embracing digital which is clearly a bolt on to their great thinking. (Tho will someone please remind Mr Hegarty that we're sick of him stealing interactive limelight to showcase 60 second spots that he couldn't get past the ASA and that it's less than a year since he said you can't build a brand online - tho they've clearly demonstrated they can't - see www.ttremastered.com for a web1.0 site!) So yes, a bit risqué - who do you really think is going to tell you what they think of your new site when you promise to name them alongside? Come on Philip, you remember the fun we all had with the Wall on Revolution - bring back a truly level playing field where we're not afraid of putting our heads above the parapet and seriously shaking this industry up, an industry where the dinosaurs are doing their best to get their toys back and Haymarket continue to feed off it - all we need is a MyAgencySpace and you're all history!.

Thank you - I think. Seriously, the issue of anonymity is not so cut and dried. For all its successes, I am not sure that the Wall (a forum on one of the earlier incarnations of Revolution online) really shook anything up. If people are not encouraged to identify themselves, then their thoughts can be easily dismissed by those very people you are trying to influence. We know we are trying something different here (for us, at least) and that's why we ask the question. Does anyone else agree with Hush Hush?

I'd also point out that a). to take part in Advertising 2.0's Friday polls you don't even need to be registered on Brand Republic, let alone leave your name, and b). Advertising 2.0 (and all the other blogs on Brand Republic) are not censored in any way. For proof of this, on Hush Hush's favourite topic, click on Advertising 2.0's agency landscape category and scroll down to you see the post "BBH do digital. Badly".

Thanks Robin - although censorship is not the aim, we do have community rules and guidelines in place. That said, our intention is for this to be more about the community, and less about us. * he says, contributing the second reply to this blog post * Not that I am trying to fix the Friday poll ...

Got to let people be anonymous if you want to really hear what people are really thinking in the industry - it's better for debate if people identify themselves, but if we don't allow anonymity the really interesting stuff will too often happen elsewhere.

It may not be an either/or question though. Some debates could allow anonymity - others might not. It all depends on the guidelines and the issues that members of the republic would like to tackle. That said, I have always found this a fascinating issue - journalists, and bloggers for that matter, are often very keen to put their names to their views. After all, anonymity does not guarantee informed or insightful comment - it may facillitate it however.
